Fun Facts - Christmas Edition

  • Ancient cultures believed holly and ivy have magical properties. Decorating with holly and ivy was thought to ward of evil spirits.
  • Christmas pudding was initially made with meat
  • Boxing Day was originally made a public holiday to allow employees to give gifts to their servants. It was later given the name after churches collected gifts and money in boxes to give to the poor.
  • It is technically illegal to eat mince pies on Christmas Day in England. Oliver Cromwell banned them in the 17th century and anything to do with gluttony. The law has never been rescinded.
  • Rudolph was invented in the 1930s for a promotion used by a US firm.
